Personal Experience Related By Registered Nurse Eleanor...

This essay will address a personal experience related by Registered Nurse Eleanor Geldard from Suzanne Gordon’s book (2010), When Chicken Soup Isn’t Enough. A personal reflection will then be provided. Following, the key challenges identified in the story will be incorporated into personal development goals. A conclusion concerning the learning outcomes of this assessment will be supplied. Suzanne Gordon’s book (2010), When Chicken Soup Isn’t Enough shares a personal experience of Registered Nurse Eleanor Geldard, titled, Intolerable Behaviour. When Geldard was working in South Africa, a nurse in her Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was verbally abused in front of patients and their families, by a doctor. Geldard could not stand this doctor’s†¦show more content†¦I avoid confrontation as much as possible and will take abuse, mistreatment and demeaning behaviours rather than standing up for myself. I know that the limited confidence I have in myself inhibits me from advocating for myself and others; and could prove detrimental if not changed before I enter the health care system. Geldard allowed me to reflect upon my weaknesses and ponder ways to build upon then to become, a confident, professional communicator so that in turn I can advocate for ethnical groups as a student nurse (Geldard, 2010). Although disagreements may arise from my advocati on, by having conflict management strategies in place I will be able to address these issues in a professional manner. The three leadership challenges that I have identified throughout this reflection are, low confidence in myself, lack of professional communication techniques and limited ability to manage conflict. For the duration of this essay I will address these topics and outline goals that will be put in place to improve them. To increase my personal confidence, I can develop my knowledge of nursing practice (Kinney, Montegut, Charlton and McManus, 2017).
